Summer kitchen care: plan the fridge, barbecue and clean-up
A barbecue with friends can put extra pressure on the fridge, worktops and clean-up. A useful plan starts before the first food is taken outside: where it will be stored, what needs cleaning and whether the appliances are ready for the occasion.

Check chilled storage before filling it
Use a fridge thermometer and follow food labels. The Food Standards Agency recommends keeping the fridge at 5°C or below. A clean fridge is still not adequate if it is not cooling correctly.
If you are booking a fridge clean, arrange appropriate chilled storage first. Confirm defrosting requirements for the model and wait for the appliance to recover to the right temperature before returning food that needs refrigeration.
Look at the barbecue while it is cool
Check the condition of cooking grates, trays and accessible surfaces before the day you plan to cook. Distinguish grease and food residue from rust, damaged coatings or a fault.
Tell a cleaning provider the model, fuel type, size and garden access. A barbecue clean does not replace gas servicing or repair a failing component. Leave time to follow the aftercare instructions before using it.

Keep food preparation and cleaning organised
Follow official food-safety guidance and the instructions for products used on food-contact surfaces. Keep cleaning equipment and products separate from food and follow the required rinsing instructions.
Do not make a long appliance clean part of the same period when food needs chilled storage and worktop space. Arrange the involved jobs beforehand, with a clear place for food and removable components.
Give the kitchen a realistic priority list
For an hourly kitchen clean, focus on the areas you will use: accessible worktops, the sink, cooking surfaces and the floor. Empty cupboards only if their interiors are agreed tasks.
A specialist oven clean is separate from the basic oven cleaning included in a kitchen service. Discuss any hob, extractor, fridge or floor work together, while keeping the scope and full price clear.
Worth keeping in mind
Before the guests arrive
Check the fridge temperature, confirm the barbecue’s condition, clear useful worktop space and allow time for cleaning and drying. Keep food-safety decisions separate from appearance.
Make the after-party work manageable
Once appliances are cool, follow their care instructions for spills and residue. Avoid leaving food deposits to be reheated repeatedly at the next cookout. Do not tackle hot grates simply to finish quickly.
Record anything that needs more attention, such as a damaged seal or a barbecue coating that has begun to peel. Cleaning may reveal wear; it is not a guarantee that every used appliance can look new.
